• Freelancing Mums offers useful information, practical resources and friendly events to help you set up as a freelancing mum and keep going once you’ve started.

It’s based on my personal experience of juggling freelancing with being a mum plus a decade of working with government, businesses and community groups across the UK to help parents combine their work and family life.

  • At the moment, everything is completely free. I may charge for some events and resources in the future but will always let you know the cost in advance.

If you like what you see, it would be brilliant if you could buy me a virtual cuppa to keep me going as I work through those long nights.

    You can do that here.

  • I thought long and hard about whether I should use the word ‘mums’ in the name because I want Freelancing Mums to welcome everyone who finds the content useful.

Ultimately, there are some issues that tend to more common to mums than dads, whether that’s a career gap while they have kids, a big dose of imposter syndrome or juggling work with taking on the bulk of the childcare.

This is definitely not to say that all families are set up this way or that all mums experience these challenges – or even that everyone feels comfortable with the term ‘mum’. But I wanted mums to feel it was a welcome place that reflected their specific issues. And so I decided to be brave and go for a name that said that!

But although it’s called Freelancing Mums, freelancing dads are super welcome to use the site, come to events, sign up to the newsletter… In fact, I’d love freelancing dads to be a full part of Freelancing Mums. Come to that, you don’t even need to be a parent. Or a freelancer. If it’s useful and relevant, then you it’s open to you.

  • Yes! You’ll find articles that explore whether freelancing is the right option for you and practical information to help you get set up if you decide to go for it. Plus, we’re building a community of people who care about freelancing mums, even if they’re not actually freelancing mums themselves. So please come right in.

  • Yes! A central part of Freelancing Mums is supporting established freelancers to thrive. There’s a really high drop out rate of freelancers, with many leaving the freelance life between one to five years after they start. Freelancing Mums’ events, articles and resources aim to reduce the isolation and burn out so many feel and help you to keep going as a freelancer now you’ve started.

Plus there’s a directory of services as well as as links to pitching opportunities – and you never know when they might be handy!

  • Yes! One of the big reasons a lot of mums start freelancing is to choose their own hours. It doesn’t matter whether you freelance full time, part time or once a month. If you’re freelancing and looking for information and support, you’re in the right place.

  • There is a slant towards freelancers in the UK, particularly with the money and tax issues. However, many of the challenges discussed are faced by freelancers worldwide, whether that’s staying healthy while you work, finding a freelance role that suits you or working out how to set up a craft afternoon for your kids at short notice.

If you’re not from the UK and are looking for specific information for your country, let me know. I’ll try my best to point you in the right direction – and if there is enough interest from a particular area, I’ll look into creating a section just for you.

  • Yes! It’s only me right now (with a helping hand from a few other amazing freelancers) and I’m operating on a micro-budget but I am definitely open to ideas and will always pay for work that I use. You can pitch ideas via the contact form here. Make sure you label it ‘Pitch’ so I can pick it out easily.

  • Send it to me via the contact form and I’ll do my very best to answer it (assuming it’s relevant to Freelancing Mums, of course – I can’t promise to give you answers to the meaning of life or what you should call your next child!). Chances are, if you’ve got a question that needs answering, other people might be wondering it too. So, go for it!
